MINT SPRING, Va. - Seven cadets from Virginia Military Institute are marching more than 80 miles in the footsteps of their counterparts who fought in the Civil War Battle of New Market.

Sophomore Aaron Cregar of Frederick, Md., says the march from Lexington to New Market gives the cadets an understanding of what cadets went through in 1864.

Clad in replica Confederate uniforms, the cadets are walking about 20 miles per day along U.S. 11. They stopped Tuesday in Mint Spring and will participate in a reenactment this weekend marking the battle's 145th anniversary.

More than 250 cadets fought alongside Confederate soldiers in the battle and 10 were killed.
