New product promises longer lashes

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A new product just passed by the FDA promises you can grow thicker, longer eyelashes. It's called Latisse. Some are calling it a miracle grow for lashes, but are there any consequences and is it worth the cost? WAVY.com did some digging and found a volunteer willing to test it out.

Uli Nagengast told WAVY.com, "As soon as I found out about Latisse I got all excited about it." Nagengast finds out about new cosmetic products before many others because she works at the Laser Skin and Vein Center in Virginia Beach.

When Director Dr. David McDaniel asked who'd like to give Latisse a try, she jumped at the chance.

"I spend so much money on mascara and lash tinting every year and I heard about Latisse and thought, hey who doesn't want longer thicker lashes."

The eye drops come in a small bottle with a tiny bush to paint the solution at the base of your lashes.
Allergan, the company that makes it says your lashes can grow fuller and longer in about 12 weeks.

Doctor McDaniel says the drops were originally used to treat glaucoma and longer lashes were a side effect. "People were having to trim their eyelashes," he said.

Dr. McDaniel says other side effects can include eye irritation and a rather peculiar one for people with blue eyes.

"So their pretty Paul Newman blue eyes turned a little darker, and that was not reversible."

It doesn't work for everyone. Dr. McDaniel says Uli should see results in two months or know she's not going to.

"I would love to be one of the trimmers. Who doesn't want to say, hey I have to trim my eyelashes they're so long, I just think that sounds fun," she said.

The price may not sound as pleasant. suggested retail is $120 for a one month supply and when you stop using it -- your lashes return to lackluster.

We're still waiting to see if Latisse works for Uli.  She hasn't seen a great deal of growth yet, but Dr. McDaniel says you have to give it a full two months, so we're going to wait two more weeks then we will reveal her results.
