Five foods to help you lose weight

Slim down for swimsuit season

YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) - If you are looking to shed a few pounds before bringing out your swimsuit, WAVY.com asked Registered Dietitian Jill Weisenberger of York Town for five superfoods to help you slim down.

"The first one I chose is the salad, and researchers from Penn State have found that when people eat a salad before the meal they eat less overall," she said.

Jill says water rich foods fill us up, like her second slimming food, soup.

"The water in food is absorbed in the stomach more slowly so you'll feel more full then if you just had a glass of water."

Same goes for juicy fiber rich fruits like canteolope. She compares half a cantaloupe at 200 calories with 200 calories worth of pretzels.

"The cantaloupe would keep you two, three hours, I don't think the pretzels would last an hour or two."

Controlling hunger is what slimming down is all about, and adding protein will keep you full for longer periods of time.

Weisenberger suggests one egg with six grams of protein, or Greek yogurt, on of her favorites.

"A full cup of this is only 120 calories and 20 grams of protein," she said. "So, that's a huge amount of protein for so few calories."

But Weisenberger could not stop with just five, so she added one more. It is not really food, it is sugarless gum.

Studies suggest that chewing it in the afternoon can reduce sweet cravings and afternoon calories by 40.

So chew on that.
