(WAVY) - No matter which candidate you're voting for, we're on your side with everything you need to know to be prepared for Election Day.

Virginia : Polling places are open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.
North Carolina : Polling places are open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

As long as you are in line by the poll closing time, you will be able to vote.

You must have identification to vote. 

"What we're looking for is your name and your address to match what we have on the books for your voter registration," said Chesapeake General Registrar Al Spradlin.

Acceptable photo IDs in Virginia include:

• Virginia voter registration card
• Valid Virginia driver's license
• Military ID
• Federal, Virginia state or local government-issued ID
• Employer issued photo ID card
• Concealed handgun permit
• Valid student ID issued by any institution of higher education located in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Current utility bill, bank statement, government check or paycheck indicating the name and address of the voter
• Social Security card (*please see below as the social security card does not satisfy special federal ID requirements)

A voter who does not bring an acceptable ID to the polls will be offered a provisional ballot. Spradlin explained to WAVY.com, "It will be placed in a sealed envelope  and it won't be opened until we have your ID. Now you have until noon on Friday to provide us with an ID if you vote provisional."

If you applied for an absentee ballot and are going instead to vote in person, you must bring the absentee ballot with you.

Spradlin also recommends looking at a sample ballot for your locality before heading to the polls. He said, Virginia's ballot is complicated and could easily take a 10 minutes to read through for someone who has never seen it.  You can look for your sample ballot by clicking here.
