VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Republican Scott Rigell was re-elected Tuesday to the second congressional district, consisting of Virginia Beach and parts of Norfolk and Hampton.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting on Wednesday morning, the incumbent retained 54 percent of the vote, in comparison with opponent Paul Hirschbiel, Jr.'s 46 percent.

Rigell, 52, was elected to represent the district in November 2011, and had served for six years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He has served in the House Armed Services Committee, Committee on Homeland Security and the Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Rigell owns a series of car dealerships in the Hampton Roads area.

This election was the first run for Hirschbiel, a 59-year-old democrat. Hischbiel is an owner of a Beach-based investment firm.
