DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - A woman was able to thwart a potential burglar at her home in Dare County.
According to Chief Deputy Steve Hoggard with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a home in the Dogwoods community on Roanoke Island on Jan. 12. The victim told deputies she heard someone trying to get into her back door.
When she looked outside, she saw someone at the door an asked what he was doing. The suspect left. One scene, deputies found a screwdriver by the door.
Deputies were able to identify a suspect and arrested Sumner Rebecca Scarborough, 59, of Manteo on Jan. 16. Scarborough has been charged with attempted breaking and entering, attempted larceny and possession of burglary tools.
Hoggard said Scarborough was an acquaintance of the landlord who owned the home.
