HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Hampton Police have arrested a man in connection the murder of a woman who was sitting in a vehicle when she was shot.
According to Cpl. Mary Shackelford with the Hampton Police Division, officers were dispatched to a shooting victim call to the 1200 block of West Avenue at approximately 5:43 p.m. Minutes before, police say they also received a shots fired call on Mason Street and add the two calls were related.
Police found a woman on West Avenue lying in the grass suffering from an upper torso gunshot wound.
"I've probably seen her, but at this point I don't know who it was yet," neighbor Jonathan Dudley told WAVY.com Tuesday night. "You definitely don't want to think about your neighborhood in that way, but really it can happen anywhere."
Dudley could only watch as crews rushed the victim to the hospital where she was pronounced dead at 6:31 p.m.
Wednesday, Shackelford said the shooting occurred outside the victim's home in the 900 block of Mason Street. The victim, identified as 29-year-old Lekeia Moneke Griffin, was sitting in a vehicle when she was approached by Traer Ramon Tisdale, 31, according to police.
Investigators say Tisdale and Griffin got into a verbal altercation and Tisdale shot into the vehicle, hitting Griffin. Griffin then drove herself to the 1200 block of West Avenue for help and that is where police found her on the ground.
Tisdale was arrested around 4 a.m. and has been charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and shooting into an occupied vehicle. He remains incarcerated at the Hampton City Jail.
