NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Detectives assigned to the Newport News Police Department's Organized Crime Division have announced that they've indicted 33 people wanted on charges related to the distribution of heroin and cocaine.
Two officers conducted all of the undercover buys. Following the lengthy narcotics operation, authorities began rounding up the suspects on Thursday during a mission dubbed "Operation Snowman". The operation was named this because the cocaine dealers called themselves snowmen.
"A lot of these drug guys sell cocaine. They call themselves snowmen because of the cocaine [they deal] as snow because it's white," said one of the officers.
On Friday, 14 of the wanted persons had been arrested.
32-year-old Thomas Michael Holt was arrested at the home where he lives with his mother. Signs of children were everywhere in the front yard.
Holt's mother said she never knew her son was distributing heroin, as the Grand Jury said he was.
Holt is in jail, and his mother was broken hearted. "I've talked to him, He claims it was just a misunderstanding. I really don't know. It's a lot for me to take in," she said.
Holt's house was also decorated for the season.
Detectives and officers are continuing their efforts to locate the remaining drug suspects.
