KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) - Officers in Kill Devil Hills have arrested a man accused of trying to rob a Walgreens store Saturday, demanding narcotics.

Sgt. J.C. Towler, Jr. with the Kill Devil Hills Police Department said a man wearing large sunglasses and a dark hooded sweatshirt entered the Walgreens in Kill Devils Hills around 12:30 p.m.  There, he handed pharmacists a note that claimed he hand a gun and demanded Hydomorphone medication.

“Hydomorphone is, in medical terms, an opioid analgesic and, in legal terms, a narcotic,” Towler said.

One pharmacist tried to call for help, and the suspect spotted her, jumping over the counter to try to stop her, Towler added. Afraid, the suspect ran out of the store toward his vehicle and fled the scene.

Witnesses and surveillance footage led police to identify the suspect as Martin Lewis Hardy, 30, of Manteo. Hardy was arrested around 6:30 p.m. at his home.

Hardy was booked into the Dare County Detention Center and placed under a $100,000 bond.
