NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A 29-year-old man is behind bars accused of strangling two people during a domestic incident Sunday night.

Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Kirk Drive around 10:45 p.m. in reference to a domestic assault, Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY.com. Once on scene, they met with a 25-year-old female victim and a 42-year-old male victim who said they had been assaulted by Charles G. Hamilton, Jr. of Smithfield.

According to the victims, Hamilton became involved in a verbal altercation with a 28-year-old woman when he arrived at the home intoxicated. At one point, the altercation turned physical and the victim and suspect were locked in a bathroom.

Thurston said Hamilton began choking the victim and another victim was able to break into the bathroom. The woman ran out of the back door when Hamilton caught up with her and began choking her again, Thurston added.

One victim tried to restrain Hamilton, which resulted in Hamilton choking him, witnesses said.

When police tried to make contact with Hamilton, Thurston said he stayed inside the home. Eventually, Hamilton broke out a back window and climbed through, where he was taken into custody. He has been charged with three counts of misdemeanor assault, two counts of strangulation and one count of resisting arrest.
