NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say one man is facing 11 counts of attempted murder and two detectives have been placed on administrative leave following an officer-involved shooting Thursday.
According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, officers attempted to serve a narcotics search warrant in the 2000 block of Chestnut Avenue Thursday just after 7 p.m.
Thurston said when officers approached the home, they heard several gunshots. He said one officer's ballistic shield was struck by a bullet. Two officers then returned fire and the incident was determined to be a tactical situation.
Lu'Tise Jonathan Pretlow, a tenant living at the rooming house home when the shooting started told WAVY.com police initially knocked on the door.
"Then they banged again and that's when they said police open up," Pretlow added. "So when I was coming to the door to open it up before I could get halfway through the hallway shots rang out. It was an experience I will never, I mean never, forget."
The owner of the rooming house, Hilda Hopewell, like Pretlow, said she had no idea what was going on until she talked with police. "Why would somebody, if the police are at your door and you know they are coming, they got you surrounded, why would you shoot out at them? You don't have a chance. you don't have a fighting chance."
Six individuals, all of Newport News were arrested. During the search, a "large amount" of crack cocaine was found as well as two handguns.
Two Newport News detectives were placed on administrative leave with pay following the incident. A criminal investigation conducted by the Homicide Unit is ongoing, as is an internal investigation.
The following individuals were detained:
