NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A robbery suspect got more than he bargained for when the victims fought back Sunday night.

According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, officers responded to a call regarding a person with a gun in the 700 block of Shadwell Court just after 8 p.m.

Further investigation revealed two men were approached by a man who produced a handgun and demanded money. Both victims were struck in the head with the gun.

Thurston said the victims were able to fight back and detained the suspect, identified as Isaac Hawkins, 20, of Newport News until police arrived. As they detained Hawkins, a second suspect who appeared to be with Hawkins arrived on scene, but was chased off by the victims.

Hawkins was later transported to a local hospital after complaining of breathing difficulties. He has since been charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
