Police to leave car lock reminders

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth police say they will be leaving reminder notes on unlocked vehicles or those containing valuables in a effort to curb larcenies from cars.

According to Jan Clark with the Portsmouth Police Department, patrol officers, neighborhood impact officers and crime prevention officers will check vehicles by looking inside of them for valuables and checking to see if doors are locked or unlocked. If either of these is observed, the officer will leave a note called an Auto Alert, letting the owner of the vehicle know they could be victims.

Clark ensures the officers will not open or sift through the vehicles.

The Auto Alerts are not tickets or summons, but just reminders for drivers not to keep valuables in their cars and to lock their doors.

The program started last month, and Clark says several hundred alerts have been placed on vehicles.
