CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Police say two cars collided in Chesapeake when homeowners drove after suspects who they watched steal a Hummer from their home's garage.
According to Kelly O'Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department, a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were driving in a Ford Focus in the 4200 block of Quailshire Drive and saw a Hummer running inside of a garage just after 8 a.m.
O'Sullivan said the 17-year-old male, who was armed with a handgun, got out of the Ford, entered the Hummer and drove away with it for a short time. The female suspect, 18-year-old Micara Ellis, continued driving the Ford.
Residents who owned the Hummer observed this happening, and went on to follow the Hummer and the Ford in another one of their vehicles, a Lincoln Navigator.
The male suspect pulled over, left the Hummer and got back into the Ford with Ellis.
The suspect and victim cars collided as they were driving onto Route 663 from Route 58. The male suspect fled on foot, which caused police to issue a lockdown for approximately one hour at Joliff Middle School.
Ellis did not attempt to run away and was charged with conspiracy, armed burglary, grand larceny and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Charges are pending for the male suspect, who has not been apprehended.
