NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police arrested one man Thursday evening following a two-hour negotiation period when he refused to leave his estranged wife's home.

According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, police responded to the 300 block of Charles Street at 9:30 p.m. for a domestic situation.

Thurston says 33-year-old Timothy Scott Raynor forced his way into his estranged wife's home with a handgun and made threats to harm himself and her. Thurston says Raynor placed the couple's 5-year-old daughter outside during the fight when he refused to let the woman leave.

The woman was able to leave the residence at one point and retrieve her daughter, according to police.

Once officers arrived, they determined Raynor was not willing to leave the residence. Thurston says the Newport News Tactical Operations Unit and crisis negotiators responded to the scene and Raynor surrendered himself shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Raynor has been charged with one count each of burglary, abduction, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, brandishing a firearm and misdemeanor assault on a family member.
