PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A pizza delivery driver was was shot early Monday morning in Portsmouth and is in stable, but serious condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokeswoman Jan Westerbeck confirmed the shooting happened around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and Palmer Street.

The WAVY News 10 crew on scene arrived to find investigators searching a vehicle with a Chanello's pizza delivery sign on top.

Westerbeck said the victim had just made a delivery at a location in the 2000 block of Piedmont Avenue, when he returned to his vehicle parked nearby. At 1:05 a.m. the victim called police and reported that he had been shot.

When officers arrived on scene, the victim was unconscious. He was rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with gunshot wounds. At this time, Westerbeck says the victim has been unable to give detectives a statement due to the severity of his injuries.

Neighbor Moses Gibson said, "When I heard those two gunshots my army training came into effect and I just hit the floor and did not move until I saw the police car come."

"We don't have that kind or trouble in this neighborhood," Gibson continued.
