62 arrested in NN warrant roundup

20 felony charges, 64 misdemeanor charges

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The Newport News Police Department arrested 62 wanted individuals in its 14th warrant operation.

Since the operation began 6 years ago, 1,250 wanted persons have been arrested. During the roundup, 20 felony and 64 misdemeanor charges were filed.

Teams of officers were briefed before hitting the streets in search of Newport News' most wanted Thursday. Most notably, officers nabbed a man wanted for murder hiding in a closet in the 800 block of 36th Street. The warrant team went to the home looking for another suspect and found Tevin Terrell Davis instead. He was one of 15 people pictured in a full length ad in the Daily Press.

"It's not uncommon to find drugs or weapons when people don't know they have warrants out for their arrest. And then you search them, and they forget that either they have it on them, or it's just a surprise that they're being arrested, and they don't have time to get rid of it," said Newport News Police Officer William Nesbitt.

A routine traffic stop made during the operation found a 15-year-old fugitive with an outstanding assault warrant.

"Anything's possible out here," said Officer Jerry Hairston.

Throughout the morning, and across the city, one fugitive after another was taken into custody. But sometimes, finding fugitives is tough.

"A lot of times, we're not going to find them. Some of the warrants are old, and the people have moved. The addresses have changed," said Officer Hairston.

Anyone with information on wanted persons can call the Fugitive Unit at 928-4289 or they may call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP where they may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward for information leading to an arrest.

The Newport News Sheriff's Office, Newport News Probation and Parole, Chesapeake Police Department, Chesapeake Sheriff's Office, James City County Police Department and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service assisted the operation.
