Mother: Son got three staples in head

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - The mother of a Chinese food delivery driver who was assaulted and shot during a delivery Sunday night said her son had to get three staples in his head.

Police said the victim was delivering Chinese food to the 2500 block of Malcolm Court when two black male suspects approached him, robbed him of an unknown amount of cash and shot him once in the abdomen.

The victim's mother spoke to 10 On Your Side about the incident, but wished to stay anonymous.

“A guy pistol whipped him in the head,” said the victim's mother who wished to conceal her identity.  “All he remembers is coming out of the house, two guys coming out of nowhere, he saw the gun, he snatched the gun and got a bad cut on his hand. He then got shot in the stomach and when he was on the ground the guy pistol-whipped him in the head."

After he was shot, the victim drove a gas station one mile away on Campostella Road.  There, he was picked up by an ambulance and taken to a hospital where he remains in good condition as of Monday afternoon.

“He is in a lot of pain," the victim's mother said. "He is complaining mostly about his head and pain from three staples in his head."

10 On Your Side looked into the crime statistics of the Sun Rise Hills neighborhood where the driver was shot.

Since August 2012, the area has seen 98 assaults, 13 robberies and three sex crimes.

The statistics may explain why  Mattie McConn, who lives in Sun Rise Hills, said she wasn't quite shocked about Sunday's incident.

“In a way it did, and in a way it didn't," McConn said. " There are always shootings out here, not just [Sunday] night and I go to bed and it gets quiet, and then you can hear a gun go off, and you don't know whether you are going to be next.”

The victim's boss at Great China restaurant on Atlantic Avenue told WAVY.com they will not be delivering to the neighborhood for the time being.

“Right now we aren't delivering to the area... No, it scares me,” Andy Zheng said.

The victim's mother is keeping her son in her thoughts and hoping for a quick recovery.

“I wish my son a lot of love, and I hope everyone is out there saying prayers for him keep him in your heart," she said.
