NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A man believed to have been armed who was shot by officers is now paralyzed, according to family friends.
According to Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department, the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop Dec. 12 just before 7 p.m. at the Interstate 664 overpass near 35th Street and Madison Avenue.
Corey Moody, 40, was wanted on federal drug charges by the Drug Enforcement Association.
Four officers surrounded Moody's vehicle during the stop. Eley said one officer thought he saw Moody reaching for a weapon, so he fired a shot into Moody's car. Another officer heard the shot and fired as well.
Moody was shot in the back area and in one of his legs.
Eley said following the shooting, Moody's car darted forward but was pulled over by officers.
Earlier this week, Eley said only officer weapons were retrieved from the scene and it appeared as though Moody was not armed.
Four Newport News police officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay. Internal and criminal investigations are pending.
