NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say three children were home when an adult man was shot and sustained non-life threatening injuries Monday evening.

According to Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department, police were dispatched to a shots fired incident at approximately 8:40 p.m. in the 600 block of 12th Street.

Eley said a 43-year-old man was shot in the torso and arm and taken to the hospital. The shots were fired from outside of the home and it is not known whether the man was the target or if he was struck by stray gunfire.

Police say three children were home at the time of the shooting, two girls aged 13 and 7 and a 2-year-old boy.
