VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A Virginia Beach man was sentenced to 14 years in prison for shooting another man in the shoulder during a drug deal.
According to Harvey Bryant with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, Ronald Lee Smallwood, 26, met another man in the Regency Hilltop area of the Beach for a drug deal in May 2012.
Bryant said Smallwood sat in the back of the man's car, pulled out a gun, demanded money and hit the victim several times using the gun. Smallwood then shot the victim in the shoulder and fled the area.
The victim survived. Bryant said Smallwood was found by tracking his cell phone and charged with attempted armed robbery, malicious wounding, use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a violent felon.
Initially, Smallwood was sentenced to 28 years in prison with 16 years suspended for the incident. However, Smallwood was on good behavior from a previous robbery conviction during the May 2012 incident, so the judge added two years and three months to his sentence.
