NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a Newport News man who dropped a handgun while running from police is now in custody.
According to Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department, officers pulled 28-year-old Christian Sweat over for driving with a headlight out in the 1400 block of Marshall Avenue.
During the stop, officers smelled the odor of marijuana in Sweat's car. When he was asked to get out of his car, he sprinted from the scene and dropped a handgun while running.
Officers then established a perimeter, contacted K-9 units and later located Sweat.
Sweat was charged with obstruction, possession of firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a stolen firearm. He also received a summons for the headlight.
