NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say two suspects hit a man in the back of the head and robbed him early Monday morning in Newport News.
"It's horrible," said Newport News detective Charles Howser.
According to Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department, the victim says he was walking to his vehicle in the area of 22 Burton Avenue in Newport News. He says he was then approached by two unknown white men. One suspect asked for a lighter.
"The other male came up behind him and struck him in the back of the head," Howser added. "The victim said it was a hard object obviously not a fist."
Police say the victim then fell to the ground, was repeatedly beaten and his wallet was taken. Eley says the suspects then fled in a white four-door sedan, possibly a 90s model Ford Escort.
"It's a nice, quiet area," Howser said. "It's an odd place and odd that they would be parked on the street."
Eley says the two men used the victim's credit card at various businesses between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. that morning. Two men matching their descriptions made purchases using the victim's credit card at a Hampton Wal-Mart at 1900 Cunningham Dr.
"I'm confident that someone will come forward and provide the information," Howser said. "The video we obtained is very good. It shows their faces. I'm just hoping somebody will call in with information and tell us who they are ."
