NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a suspect has been arrested after shooting at a car within 1,000 feet of a school.

According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, the incident occurred between 8:45 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Dec. 29 at the intersection of 35th Street and Wickham Avenue.

Thurston said Childress approached a 36-year-old Suffolk man, believing him to be responsible for a separate incident in which Childress' relative was assaulted.

As Childress approached the Suffolk man's car, the man drove away and Childress allegedly shot at the car.

Childress, of Hinesville, Georgia, was charged with one count each of shooting a firearm in a public place, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and shooting a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school and two counts of attempt to commit a felony.
