NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a man who drove away following an accident in Newport News Wednesday left behind a key piece of evidence for investigators.

According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, 49-year-old Daniel David Hogge of Newport News, driving a 1996 Ford F-150 pickup truck rear-ended a 2002 Chevrolet SUV Wednesday shortly before 6 p.m. The driver of the SUV was traveling north on Jefferson Avenue and Boykin Lane.

Thurston says Hogge fled the scene but left his license plate behind.

Police were able to identify Hogge as the driver and found out he had been admitted to a local hospital for a head injury.

Hogge has been charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.
