AHOSKIE, N.C. (WAVY) - Authorities arrested a 17-year-old Ahoskie man after a hunter found a body in the woods.
The hunter reported seeing a car in the woods and a tarp covering what appeared to be a body, on Tuesday, October 11 at around 4 p.m., according to Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughn.
The body was identified as Jason Jermaine Harrell, 30, of Cofield, N.C. He was reported missing on Monday evening. The investigation revealed that his body had been in the woods since Sunday evening.
Sheriff Vaughn said Harrell had been driving the car, and the car was traced back to Harrell's mother.
An autopsy is being performed, but Vaughn said it appears Harrell died from a gunshot wound.
Authorities arrested Frederick Scott Williams, Jr. at 1 a.m. Wednesday at his home off Rockpile Road in Bertie County.
Williams was charged with first degree murder. He is being held in the Hertford County Jail without bond.
At this point, investigators do not know what the motive was. They also have not said what led them to Williams.
Williams is due in Hertford County District Court in Winton, N.C. next Tuesday.
