Hofstadler sentenced in DUI crash

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A woman who pled guilty to hitting a family as they walked to a Virginia Beach bus stop in 2012 while under the influence will spend time behind bars.

Macie Pridgen with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office told WAVY.com Sandra Hofstadler was sentenced to 12 years and 10 days. She pled guilty to two counts of DUI with a victim permanently impaired, one count of DUI – second conviction within 5 to 10 years and one count of failure to stop for a school bus.

"Honestly, I think it had to take us almost being killed in our front yard for someone to get a fair sentence," David Yancy said.

In January of 2012, Hofstadler drove around a stopped school bus and hit Yancy and his three young children in their front lawn.

Luciana Yancy, aunt to the younger victims, told 10 On Your Side how the accident changed her young nephew's life, who suffered traumatic brain damage.

"He had to go back to being a baby and relearning everything," Luciana Yancy said. "He didn't understand and he still doesn't understand why he's going through what he went through."

"He'll never be the same but you know, one day at a time. Only God knows how he going to do later on in life," his father, David Yancy said.

Neyahni Richardson spent four months out of school to learn how to get around in a wheelchair and then a walker.

"I'm trying to get back like other children, too, so I can fit in," Neyahni, then 7-years-old, told WAVY.com in May of 2012. 

Just before the New Year's holiday in 2011, 10 On Your Side did a story about safe driving. Hofstadler was one of the people interviewed . 

Hofstadler will also have to pay a $6,000 fine, Pridgen added.
