HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - A shooting along Hampton Roads Avenue forced a nearby elementary school to go on lockdown Thursday morning.

According to Sgt. Jason Price with the Hampton Police Division, officers are searching for Jerell Lamont Overton, 24, of Hampton in connection to an early morning shooting near Bassette Elementary School.

Cpl. Mary Shackelford with the Hampton Police Division told WAVY.com someone was shot around 8:30 a.m. on Hampton Roads Avenue. They received non-life threatening injuries.

Because of the shooting, nearby Bassette Elementary School located at 671 Bell St. was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure, Carolyn Bowers with Hampton Public Schools told WAVY.com.

According to Price, officers received calls for a shooting just before 9 a.m. in the 400 block of Hampton Roads Avenue. When officers arrived, they found an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say the victim got into a verbal altercation with someone he knows. During that altercation, the suspect shot him.

Friday, officers arrested Jerell Lamont Overton, 24, of Hampton. Overton has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The lockdown was lifted at the school.
