High school student killed leaving game

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A high school student was shot and killed while walking home from a football game Friday night.

Officers responded to reports of a gunshot victim on Goff Street in Norfolk around 9:15 p.m . The victim, David White, 19, of Norfolk was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It's hard to believe," said Akeem McKinley, who drove White to the football game between Lake Taylor High School and Booker T. Washington High School. "Something like this doesn't happen every day."

McKinley spent most of Saturday in his room, pouring over Twitter messages, many that read, 'R.I.P. Dee Boy,' the nickname for White.

McKinley says White was a senior at Lake Taylor. The two enjoyed watching their football teams play each other, until the fourth quarter, when White decided to walk home early.

"We went our separate ways," said McKinley. "And I was going to my car, and somebody told me that he got shot. I was trying to figure out what was going on, because I was just with him."

Word spread quickly in Tweets and texts. Students wrote messages from the scene of the crime, to let others know White had been shot, and that he didn't survive.

"I was getting ready to go home, and I seen my brother, and he told me that he [White] died," said McKinley. "And I got real upset, broke down and cried."

McKinley says White was very popular, both at school, and in the neighborhoods around it. He sees those streets differently now, because he feels they're dangerous.

"I told myself I'm not going to anymore games. I'll probably go to the Booker T. homecoming and that's it," said McKinley. "But, I'm not going to anymore games."

McKinley is organizing a candlelight vigil for White. It will be Sunday at 7 p.m. at the corner of Scott Street and Seay Avenue in the Ingleside section of Norfolk.

No arrests have been made at this point, and the investigation continues.
