Fake bearded bandit strikes again

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - A man notorious for donning fake facial hair and robbing dollar stores and auto parts shops on the Peninsula has struck again, according to police.

Since Nov. 6, 2011, an unknown black male has robbed about two dozen businesses between Hampton and Newport News. His disguise of choice is a fake beard while his targets include dollar stores, fast food restaurants and auto parts stores.

Sunday night, the suspect entered the Family Dollar located in the 900 block of Aberdeen Road in Hampton around 9:30 p.m. and demanded money from the clerks at gunpoint. This time, he wasn’t successful in obtaining any cash.

Sgt. Jason Price with the Hampton Police Division said two employees of the business ran toward the back of the store and the suspect fled on foot.

At the time of Sunday’s robbery, the suspect was wearing a teal t-shirt, dark pants, black shoes, brown gloves and a dark hat. He was also wearing his usual fake beard. The suspect stands about 5’7” and has a heavy build.

The same suspect is reportedly responsible for the following robberies in Hampton:

  • Dec, 31, 2011: Hardees - 8104 Newmarket Dr.
  • Jan. 6, 2012: Family Dollar - 2006 Nickerson Blvd.
  • Jan. 6, 2012: Hardees - 241 South Mallory St.
  • Jan. 21, 2012: Advance Auto - 2201 Andrews Blvd.
  • Feb. 5, 2012: Family Dollar - 2006 Nickerson Blvd.
  • March 2, 2012: Family Dollar - 2006 Nickerson Blvd.
  • April 6, 2012: Advance Auto - 817 LaSalle Ave.
  • April 29, 2012: Long John Silvers - 904 Big Bethel Rd.
  • May 9, 2012: Auto Zone - 2221 Kecoughtan Rd.
  • May 30, 2012: Auto Zone - 2200 block of Kecoughtan Road
  • June 28, 2012: Advanced Auto Parts - 5000 block of Mercury Boulevard
  • July 19, 2012: Auto Zone - First block of Autozone Way
  • Sept. 9, 2012: Family Dollar - 900 block of Aberdeen Road
