Elderly dog choked, dumped in lake

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A Virginia Beach man is accused of choking his 15-year-old dog and dumping her body in the lake near his home.

Animal Control officers arrested 33-year-old Joshua P. Curry on Feb. 27 after the body of his 15-year-old dog Hershey was found in the 1800 block of Blue Knob Road 10 days before. Wayne Gilbert with Virginia Beach Animal Control said Hershey’s body was found with a heavy chain wrapped around her midsection.

A necropsy determined Hershey suffered a broken jaw bone and had significant bruising around her midsection caused by the 10’ chain. It took officers canvassing door to door to find the owner, who was later identified as Curry.

Gilbert said the investigation revealed Hershey was choked and had the chain tied around her body before it was thrown into the lake near her home sometime after Thanksgiving.

Curry has been charged with felony animal cruelty and failing to cremate, bury or sanitarily dispose of a dead animal. He was released on bond.
