Defense says Navy at fault for deaths

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The defense team representing three Somali men who are in court for killing four American hostages claims it is Navy's fault the hostages were killed.
The men are being tried at Norfolk Federal Court and claimed in a court document that Navy or the FBI were negotiating with the Somali pirates aboard the Quest, when Navy deployed "helicopters, snipers and warships" at "high speed" at the Quest. The court document claim these actions were opposite of what the captain of the Quest had requested and what the Somalis claim they were assured would happen.
The document goes on to say as the Navy vessel closed on the Quest, shots were fired "that resulted in the deaths of the hostages and two of the Somalis." The defense claims that prior to this incident on Feb. 22, 2011 the four American hostages were safe and had not been harmed in the period of several days they had spent abroad the ship with 19 Somalis.
