Man ID'd in deadly shooting near ODU

Friend says man who was killed went to ODU

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - One man is dead after a shooting in the 800 block of West 42nd Street, near Old Dominion University in Norfolk overnight.

Police said 20-year-old Christopher Cummings was shot around 5 a.m. A second man was also shot. That victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"He was a criminal justice major at ODU, only 20 years old. Young, very polite, gentleman, very nice. He comes and says hi. Tells us if the music is too loud, just lets us know he'll put it down," said Nour Kheireddine, a friend of Cummings.

She said he lived at the home with another roommate who was also shot. Kheireddine has no idea who did it or why, but said it's left her feeling uneasy.

"There's been a lot of things going on this street, in this neighborhood with ODU students. Being one myself, makes me feel uncomfortable, unsafe," said Kheireddine.

While those who live on 42nd Street are saddened over the tragedy, they say crime has almost become a way of life there.

"It's really worrisome. There's a problem on 42nd Street. My neighbor had a home invasion. Right behind me, a home. I keep thinking everyday we're going to be next," said Dylan Tyson.

Tyson said before that happens, he hopes to have a new address. "It makes me real nervous. I already have plans to move," Tyson added.

At this time, there is no detailed information about the shooting. Police have not established a suspect or motive in this case. They are investigating it as a homicide.
