NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The Newport News Police Department has arrested a 21-year-old man accused of abusing his 2-month-old daughter.

Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department said officers were dispatched to Portsmouth Naval Hospital on Nov. 16 for a report of possible child abuse. When they arrived, hospital staff told officers a 2-month-old girl was admitted to the hospital and suffered from what looked like child abuse.

Police say the infant had numerous bone fractures throughout her body.

Officers arrested the baby’s father, Akhenaton Zakariyyaa of Newport News and charged him with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of felony child abuse.

Further information was not immediately available.

The infant is still in the intensive care unit at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
