Man shot by police granted bond

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - An unarmed man shot by Newport News police during a traffic stop was granted bond during a federal detention hearing Friday.

Corey Moody participated in the hearing at Norfolk Federal Court by phone from his hospital bed. He was freed on a $1,000 bond, but he remains in rehab following the shooting.

Moody was granted a federal public defender and a federal attorney.

According to Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department, the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop just before 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 at the Interstate 664 overpass near 35th Street and Madison Avenue.

Eley said Newport News detectives attempted to pull over Moody, who was wanted on federal charges by the Drug Enforcement Association. One of the officers saw Moody reach for something that appeared to be a gun and reacted by firing at Moody. Another officer heard shots fired and also fired into the suspect's car, Eley said.

Moody was shot in his leg and back. The only weapons recovered from the scene belonged to the officers. Eley said it does not appear Moody fired a weapon during the incident.

One of the officers suffered a facial injury caused by a metal fragment, Eley said.

An administrative investigation is ongoing. The four officers involved have been placed on administrative leave with pay.
