66 arrested in Newport News roundup

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Law enforcement officers in Newport News delivered a message to criminals during a two day operation: you can run, but you can't hide.

Officers made 66 arrests Thursday and Friday during a fugitive roundup. The object of the event is to arrest as many people as possible in a matter of two days. These numbers are of 4 p.m. Friday. An additional 32 felony warrant charges were cleared and officers served 74 warrants.

"At this point we have [more than] 4,400 warrants," Holly McPherson with the Newport News Department said.

It can be a game of cat and mouse. WAVY.com tagged along for a dozen door knocks where police turned up nothing.

"These warrant operations are never a waste of time," McPherson maintains.

The last time the police department conducted a fugitive roundup in July, 110 fugitives were arrested. If history is any indication, McPherson said this roundup will be a success as well.

Since 2004, police have arrested approximately 1,360 people during these warrant operations.
