DALLAS, TX (KXAS) - What was it this year? The one gift you received that was way off the mark. And what on earth are you going to do with it? A growing number of people are secretly turning their unwanted gifts into cash.
Billy Carter and Karen Furry are looking to unload and cash in.
Billy Carter says, "Pick up a few bucks from things I thought I'd sell on eBay."
Karen Furry says, "I just think this is a great way to do it."
They're actually downsizing a home, but many people will use the same strategy to dump unwanted gifts.
Cheryl Goldstein of Sold It On eBay says, "There are people who get duplicate gifts. There are people who get gifts that they have no idea what they are and they don't want them, and then there are people who also maybe upgraded some items and want to sell the ones they had before."
At the "I Sold it on eBay" store, Cheryl Goldstein sees it all.
Cheryl says, "This is a punching bag that someone brought in. Looks like it's brand new, never been used."
There's even a $500 Tiffany's gift card that Cheryl already has up for auction.
Cheryl says, "He got it as a gift from his boss, and this is a gentleman who doesn't shop at Tiffany's, but it's a $500 gift card."
If you're feeling guilty about all this, maybe this will help. According to a recent study from eBay, more people than ever will sell stuff like unwanted cell phones this year.
Customer Karen Furry says, "That might be a good idea. Let me think. What did I get?"
The survey found the most popular gifts to sell include electronics, DVD's, CD's or books, event tickets, and fitness equipment.
Karen says, "They do all the work and that's the best part."
Cheryl says, "The person who brings an item in can expect to get about 60 percent of what the item sells for."
Don't worry. Your secret is safe.
Cheryl says, "You are totally anonymous. Your Aunt Sally does not have to know that you are selling her gift."
And she never has to know that what she really gave you was cash.
Cheryl says, "Everybody loves getting a check in the mail."
