VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Hundreds turned out at Rock Church in Virginia Beach to say goodbye to Norfolk State University's "winningest" football coach, William "Dick" Price. Coach Price, who was 75 years old, died after a long battle with cancer.

By all accounts, William "Dick" Price was a faithful football, track coach and educator. As family and friends gathered to mourn, they remembered his challenges at a young Norfolk State, which at the time didn't have all the proper facilities. But Price was able to coach winning teams despite those limitations.

Bill Archie, Retired NSU Athletic Director said at Monday's farewell, "This guy was unbelievable. He believed you could take ordinary people and let them do extraordinary things. That was Dick Price."

Dick Price was remembered for the many people he helped along the way, students, athletes and many more.

WAVY-TV 10's Sports Director, Bruce Rader said, "And those of us here today are better and those young people that will come will be better because Coach Dick Price was here, thank you."

His grandson, Craig Stevens says Price helped him excel at football, "He would teach me how to throw the ball. He would show me how to pump my arms when I'm running with my steps. I don't remember exactly what he said, but I know it was along the lines of, 'boy, why did I teach you how to play football, because you're never going to let me get a nap again."

Everyone laughed.

Former Athlete, Bernard McKie said, "He taught us how to lead, how to follow when we needed to and how to enjoy life."

Dick Price is survived by his three grandchildren, his daughter, Dr. Lisa Price Stevens and a son-in law, along with a number of other relatives and friends.

He will certainly be missed by many.
