Get ready to save; tax-free weekend

VIRGINIA - As you get ready to send your children back to school you can save some cash as you fill up their backpacks. This weekend is the back-to-school sales tax holiday in Virginia.

If you like having a little extra cash in your pocket at the end of the day, this weekend is the time to hit the stores. Starting today shoppers can buy all kinds of items from school supplies, to clothes and even some electronics -- all tax free.

Shoppers eager for the start off the tax free holiday flocked to Wal-Mart in the wee hours of the morning.

Shoppers at retail stores statewide will be exempt from the five percent sales tax on school supplies priced up to $20 per item and clothes and shoes priced up to $100. Stores also can choose to exempt other items and pay the taxes themselves. Across Hampton Roads, stores are ready for big sales.

The taxation department expects shoppers to save $4 million during the period.

The tax free holiday will run from today through Sunday, so get ready to save in this difficult economy.
