HAMPTON, Va. - It was impossible to find a hotel room in Hampton Friday night. That's because thousands of loyal Phish fans are in Hampton for the band's first show since their breakup in 2004.
The city of Hampton has once again been turned into a Phish frenzy. The Vermont-based group is back together and packed Hampton Coliseum Friday night.
Phish will be in town for the next three days. Tickets to all three shows sold out within minutes of going on sale.
"It's huge," said Roh Patel, General Manager for the Best Western. "It's like there is rain coming when there is a drought."
Like most businesses, things have been down at the Best Western. That was until Phish announced they were coming back to what they call "The Mothership."
"This would have been a good blessing in January," added Patel. "I hope they can do more of these shows. This is a great shot in the arm."
Hampton City Officials say Phish heads will spend an estimated $5 million over the weekend.
"Restaurants are staying open later at night," said Sallie Grant-DiVenuti, Executive Director of the Hampton Convention and Visitor Bureau. "We have businesses that are supporting the tourism efforts and putting welcome signs on their marquees for the people coming into town."
Officials say $5 million in one weekend is equal to almost two weeks of revenue in March of 2008.
Whether it's fans who have tickets, or those who are still looking, everyone is spending money.
"I think it's important for musical bands to make an impact on
the local community," said Phish fan Elisa Ayarza. "That's exactly
what Phish does."
