VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The driver in a crash that killed a former volleyball star at Cox High School has been released from the hospital and transported to the Virginia Beach City Jail.

The driver, Cameron Crockett, 20, of  Va. Beach is charged with Aggravated Involuntary Manslaughter, DUI, Refusal, Illegal Possession of Alcohol and Driving Without a License.

Beach police say, Crockett lost control of the vehicle on Wolfsnare Road and hit a tree Sunday night. Crockett received minor injuries, his passenger, 20-year-old John "Jack" Korte, of Duke of York Quay in Virginia Beach, was killed.

Virginia Beach Police spokesperson Adam Bernstein tells WAVY.com that alcohol and speed played a part in the crash.

Korte and Crockett were long-time friends. Korte was a star volleyball player at Cox High School before he graduated in 2007. He was named All-Tidewater Player of the Year in 2006 and also played volleyball at George Mason University in Northern Virginia.

Family members say Korte was set to head back to college on Tuesday.

A high school friend of Korte's told WAVY.com, "He was such a great person, very bubbly personality."

Korte's mother, father, younger brother and younger sister have been grieving together at their home, surrounded by friends, neighbors and their large extended family.

Monday, December 29th was Korte's brother Ben's birthday. He turned 18 Monday, waking up in the morning to learn his big brother had just been killed in a car crash.

People who live half a mile from the scene say they heard the loud crash Sunday night.

It happened right in Joe Dickson's front yard. "We just started praying, my wife and I," said Dickson. "You know, your stomach kind of goes on you and you get a little wobbly."

Dickson said, "The car just looked like tinfoil wrapped around the tree. The car was almost cut in half. The driver was conscious. He was struggling, not fighting with police, just in shock, they had to calm him down."

Crockett is expected to be arraigned in court on Friday.
