Wintry, windy weather hit Eastern Shore

Wind restrictions delay traffic on bridge

NORTHAMPTON CO., Va - It's that time of year; the time where just about every place looks better than the place where you are. That's what you might think while looking at the Sunset Beach Resort billboard at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in 30 degree weather.

For David Berg, it was also the same time he decided to walk away from wintry weather in Annapolis, MD and head south.

But it seems he can't move fast enough. "This is what I'm moving away from," Berg joked as snow flurries ended their journey from above on his shoulders and hat, "It looks like it's following me."

It was almost as if Mother Nature wanted to tease him. Trying to escape eventual snow up north, Berg, his wife and three sons were stuck in snow at the CBBT. "They're sleeping, I can't sleep," he laughed.

Berg's trip included 2 U-Hauls - one with a trailer - and because of wind restrictions, they could not pass across the bridge.

He has a new home and warmer weather waiting for him in South Carolina. The trip from the bridge to there was probably shorter than the 12 hour wait he's endured since late Tuesday afternoon. “I've got to be there tomorrow, I've got appliances coming to the house and if I miss them, I have to wait another week."

With dozens of other U-Hauls, and 18-wheelers around, it seemed waiting was all there was to do.

That's usually what you find at this place, this time of year; the place where practice makes patience.

"Oh yeah, I'm upset," he said.

At least sometimes.
