HAMPTON, Va. - Sunshine Williams tried to have a normal birthday. And the plan for the most part was working, but then the police rolled in.

The entire K9 unit crashed Sunshine's party Saturday. The party did seem a bit suspicious after all, a nine-year-old girl giving all her money away to police.

"Oh, its amazing you know a nine-year-old girl putting this all together and we're very pleased to be here," said Officer Birdsong with the Hampton Police Department.

Sunshine dedicated her birthday to police dogs, raising money for $500 bulletproof vests for Hampton's K-9 Unit, who showed up to thank her.

If dog is truly man's best friend, consider Sunshine a close second. She got her own dog when word spread about the fundraiser.

"I got a dog from it," laughed Sunshine. "PJ, she's precious."

Now it was everyone else pitching in.

"It's a picture book!," yelled Sunshine, opening a gift from police with pictures of dogs.

The party kept on getting better when the gifts kept on getting bigger.

"500 dollars!," screamed Sunshine in surprise. A check from Hampton Firefighters Association gave her enough money to buy one more vest to protect one more dog.

And for Sunshine, that's what this is all about: making a big difference in the community through a small, personal sacrifice.

Sunshine Williams raised more than $3,000, enough to buy six bullet proof vests for the Hampton Police Department K-9 Unit.
