NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion Univeristy sent out and posted a safety alert Thursday, in response to a student assault near the Norfolk campus.

Officers responded to the Shell gas station on Hampton Boulevard and 49th Street just after 2 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators tell WAVY.com at least one person was jumped by several suspects. The victim was then rushed to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Police say the victim is a man in his 20's. Police are looking for four suspects. If you have any information about this case, call the Crime Line at 1-888-Lock-U-Up.

The University issued the following campus-wide email to let students know about the incident:

At approximately 2:15 a.m. this morning, an Old Dominion University student was assaulted behind the former Dunkin Donuts location near the intersection of 49th Street and Hampton Boulevard. The student was walking from the direction of Colley Avenue.

According to the police report, the individual was jumped by several suspects, all white males, who emerged from a passing car.

The student was taken to the hospital and is expected to be released later this morning.

Another individual who was with the student was able to get the license plate number of the vehicle and flag down an ODU police officer on patrol.

Norfolk Police Department is handling the investigation.

The campus community is reminded to exercise precaution, especially when walking late at night, and to utilize the campus escort service and shuttles. You should report any suspicious activity or call the ODU police for assistance at 683-4000.
