NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - When we introduced you to Pastor John Young of Empowered Believers Christian Learning Center on Monday, his church needed help.
"We just want fair treatment," says Young.
However, five days after our 10 On Your Side investigation aired, Pastor Young and his church family sing a different tune.
"We've gotten calls from contractors, electricians, painters, and all types of people that are willing to volunteer their services."
A recent city inspection of Empowered Believers at 656 79th Street, revealed property owner, The Dilweg Companies, doesn't have the proper permits to house a church there.
Dilweg gave the church 40 days to move, but after our story aired...
"We've discovered now that July 31st is not a drop dead date for us. So, we'd like to thank Mr. Redifer and the city officials of Newport News for hearing our plea in allowing us more time to vacate and identify a new facility," says Pastor Young.
10 On Your Side asked Dilweg if it could offer financial relief to the church that was leased through 2011.
"They have agreed to work with us in an endeavor to try and compensate us for their mishap in the ability to transition smoothly," says Pastor Young.
Then came a call from a man named Skip Campana.
"I was shaving, it was on the news. I heard it," says Campana.
Campana owns Nickerson Plaza in Hampton and he owns space he's willing to lease to the church for a reduced price after seeing our story.
"These kind of deals, you jump in, you roll up your sleeves. I have the space. I have a great center," says Campana.
Now it's a place Empowered Believers may call their new home.
"I really believe that 10 On Your Side has been one of God's instruments in helping us to put a voice to our situation," says Pastor Young.
Young says they still need help from contractors. If you have time to volunteer or help the church, call 240-5834.
