SUFFOLK, Va. - The walls of Firehouse Subs in Suffolk are a tribute to local firefighters, with paintings, pictures, and murals telling the story of life on the job.
The restaurant chain raises money for local departments, giving them the opportunity to purchase new gear or the latest equipment to assist in firefighting.
"The firefighters love it," laughed General Manager Thomas Pingitore.
But now the boys in red are helping their brothers in blue.
On June 1, Chesapeake Officer Sean Fleming was off duty when he heard a police chase on the emergency radio. He raced to help out his fellow officers. The scene eruped into a gunfight. Police say Officer Fleming shot and killed one of three suspects in what they describe as an attempted abduction.
Fleming was also hit, suffering five gunshots from an AK-47.
Fleming has said he'll be back on the force sometime soon, but has not yet specified a date. Firehouse Subs is helping his recovery, raising money for him and his family through donations and sales of pickle buckets.
The fundraiser runs through Sunday, July 5. The following Firehouse Subs are all participating:
o Crossways Center, 1412 Greenbrier Pkwy, Chesapeake
o Battlefield, 1217 Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake
o Chesapeake Square, 4105 Chesapeake Square, Chesapeake
o Landstown, 3388 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach
o Lynnhaven Mall, 2704 N. Mall Dr., Virginia Beach
o Hilltop, 1577 Laskin Rd., Virginia Beach
o Suffolk, 1201 N. Main St., Suffolk
o Harbourview, 6255 College Dr., Suffolk
