VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Beach Police are currently investigating a fatal motorcycle accident. It happened just before 9:50 a.m. in the 5700 block of Shore Drive near Diamond Springs Road.
Matthew Ryan Mason, 24, of the 5500 block of Bantry Lane in Virginia Beach died after being transported to an area hospital.
Wayne Gilbert, spokesperson for the Virginia Beach Police Department, told WAVY.com that Mason was traveling westbound on Shore Drive on a 2001 Honda CVR at a high rate of speed.
He lost control, went through a grassy median, struck a 'Welcome to Virginia Beach' sign before striking a '91 Ford Taurus.
According to police, Mason was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
The driver of the Ford Taurus suffered minor injuries.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the accident. They do not believe alcohol was a factor.
