PORTSMOUTH, Va. - On December 5, a World AIDS Day Gala will be held at the Basilica of St. Mary's, located at 232 Chapel Street, in Norfolk. The gala will consist of a buffet and dance. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
Also, on December 6, a walk will be held at 10 a.m. The walk will assemble at 9:30 a.m. and runs from NSU-Mills E. Godwin Student Center to Smith Rogers Hall, located at 358 Mowbray Arch, in Norfolk. This event is free and open to the public. Free, confidential HIV testing will also be available. Refreshments will be served following the event.

Additional World AIDS Day events will be held at Virginia Wesleyan College, the following events have been scheduled; all events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted:
Walk for HIV/AIDS
Saturday, Nov. 15
To be held in conjunction with Wesleyan Walks. All interested participants should meet at 2 p.m. at the Hub in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
AIDS Memorial Wall
Monday, Nov. 17 - Thursday, Nov. 20
The community is invited to add 44 new memorial squares to the AIDS Memorial Wall in Village II. The Wall's dedication will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, as part of the AIDS Memorial Ceremony. Living with HIV/AIDS
Friday, Nov. 21
The movie Girl, Positive will be presented at 6 p.m. in the Blocker Hall Science Auditorium. Discussion with an AIDS educator from the Tidewater AIDS Community Taskforce (TACT) will be held after the movie. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. Sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies program.
AIDS Memorial Quilt Display
Monday, Dec. 1 - Monday, Dec. 8
View panels from the largest community art project in the world, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. The quilt is brought to campus by TACT, and Virginia Wesleyan's Offices of International and Intercultural Programs, Community Service, Counseling Services, Health Services, Residence Life and Women's and Gender Studies. The quilt will be displayed at the Hub in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

"What You Don't Know CAN Kill You: HIV/AIDS 101:" Information and Safer Sex Panel
Tuesday, Dec. 2 Featuring a physician and educators from the Tidewater AIDS Community Taskforce (TACT). 8 p.m. in the Jane P. Batten Student Center, Marlin Grille.
HIV Testing: "Ignorance Can Kill"
Tuesday, Dec. 2
Free and confidential HIV testing provided by TACT from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Testing will be located in Counseling Services in the Jane P.
Batten Student Center, Room 211. This rapid, 20 minute test, involves an oral swab and a finger prick. Students with questions are asked to contact Health Services at 757.455.3108.
AIDS Memorial Ceremony and Wall Dedication
Thursday, Dec. 4
Ashleigh Roberson and Deirdre White host a memorial ceremony in the Monumental Chapel to recognize those affected by HIV/AIDS at 11 a.m.
The ceremony will serve as the official unveiling of the new portion of the AIDS Wall. Educators from Tidewater AIDS Community Taskforce (TACT), as well as people who witnessed the painting of the original Wall will be speakers at the event.

Saturday, Dec. 6
8 p.m. until midnight in the Jane P. Batten Student Center, Marlin Grille. Proceeds will support the Tidewater AIDS Community Taskforce (TACT). Admission is $2. For tickets, contact Carmen Dawkins at cjdawkins@vwc.edu, or Brad Jones at bsjones@vwc.edu.
