NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk firefighters rushed to an apartment fire in Ghent early Wednesday morning.
It broke out just before 2 a.m. on Boissevain Avenue at the Pelham Place Apartments. When crews got to the scene, they say they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the laundry room of the building. The battalion chief on the scene told WAVY.com their biggest concern was the fire that spread into the walls and climbed several floors up.
Crews tell us they managed to get everything under control within a half hour, but stayed on the scene for a few more hours to check for any hot spots.
At least one apartment is unlivable right now. At this time, it's unclear how many residents are affected.
Weather did not impact firefighters' ability to put out the flames. No one was hurt.
