NORFOLK, Va. - Inside a living room, over coffee, Joe Schein and Will Starke reminisce about better days with friend Bill Goode.
"He was just always there as a friend if you needed anyone to talk to," said Starke.
Both saw Goode as a role model.
"I think Bill's humor, his humility and his generosity," said Schein.
The trio shared in a struggle overcome -- addiction.
"If he could do it I could do it," said Starke.
Virginia State Police say Goode was killed New Year's Eve by a driver headed the wrong way on I-295 North. A police spokesperson says alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash.
"The irony of this all I guess how can this be," said Schein.
Schein says Goode was clean and sober for nearly eleven years. Three years ago, another tragedy, Starke says Goode's wife died from breast cancer.
"I think the real tragedy is their daughter that's parentless, fatherless, because he loved her more than anything," said Starke.
Police say Goode's 8-year-old daughter was in the car and has serious, but non life threatening injuries.
"I think God takes people who have really given so much and give back so generously; he takes them so other people can take their place and that's my hope here," said Schein.
Police say the driver of the other car was 19-year-old Nickolas Sickal. He has serious, but non life threatening injuries. Police say charges against him are pending.
